bio

Barbara Bowen is an American abstract artist known for the rich, complex surfaces she creates with layers of acrylic medium embedded with papers and materials that she makes in her studio. Shaped by explorations in the rugged landscapes east of the Cascades and in the southwest, her visual vocabulary explores the alchemy found in rock, rusted metals, earth and sky. A fascination with dramatic and subtle edges is another strong influence on her work. Originally from Washington D.C., she has made the Pacific Northwest her home since 1991. With a degree in Art History, she served communities since 1987 facilitating workshops, creating public art projects, and proofreading books/exhibit catalogs for museums. Currently, Barbara works full time in her Seattle studio.
