Contemporary mixed-media artworks by Barbara Bowen are known for their deep, complex surfaces. She layers acrylic mediums, papers, and found materials, then scrapes, excavates and sculpts her pieces into being, much as nature shapes the land.
Each artwork is influenced by the rugged terrains, vast skies and layered forests of the west. Intricate forms of nature fascinate Barbara, and the challenges of abstraction inspire her. Barbara responds intuitively to each image as it unfolds.
Originally from Washington D.C., Barbara has called the Pacific Northwest home for 30+ years. She has developed community through workshop facilitation, collaboration with art colleagues, by leading public art projects, and contributing to art books/exhibit catalogs.
Barbara holds a degree in Art History from the University of Maryland and currently works full time in her studio on Bainbridge Island in Washington State.
